Back Home on the Farm is the site of Harrisonburg's first cornmaze 5 years ago. The 10 foot high labyrinth is designed celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Blue Ridge Parkway. On average, maze-goers will wander for more than an hour seeking the labyrinth's one and only exit. This year, a smaller maze that takes about 15 minutes has been incorporated into the design for those who don't wish to tackle the entire maze.
Over 25 other attractions are featured on the farm, including the Virginia carousel, hayrides, pumpkin patch, farm animals and the 60 ft. slide. The creation of Utah native, Brett Herbst, the craze began when the entrepreneur introduced the largest corn maze created in the western United States to American Fork, Utah in 1996. SOME AMAZING FACTS
It takes the average visitor about an hour to discover the puzzle's exit, while those who make all the correct decisions can complete the task in 15-30 minutes.
The origin of the maze is lost in prehistory - some five millenia ago. The first cornfield maze, however, was created in Pennsylvania in 1993. Sparking a new "agritainment" industry, there are now hundreds worldwide.
While a human maze is a pretty unique use of corn, it is only one of many. Corn, more than 8,000 years old, now has more than 3,500 uses.
