Summer Camps 2011

In 2011 our staff is tentatively scheduled to present 6 summer camp programs for children 6-12 yrs of age.  These will run from 9-12 in the mornings, and include a variety of educational and recreational activities.  Snack is included in the fee.
With the exception of the Drama Camp, it is possible to attend as many or as few days of the camp as your schedule will allow.  Our week long price for 5 mornings is $100.  Individual days will be $25.  Camp will run from 9-12 Monday thru Friday.
The specific weeks will be determined at a later time.  Please contact us if you have preferred dates or any questions.
Plant Camp
Campers will learn how to dry flowers, make their own flower press, and spend a workshop making their very own dried flower notecards.  They'll learn to take cuttings and propagate plants, learn about the various sun/shade/water requirements of plants, how to read the labels in the stores for this information.  They'll also make a seed mosaic, and a stepping stone to take home.  We will spend part of the time identifying trees and making a scrapbook (something that is usually a project in middle schools in the fall).  We'll also experiment with herbs and their uses, mixing up some recipes and trying our creations.
Jr. Farmer Academy
For the farmer "wannabe".  We'll spend some time talking about the history of farming, learn how to bale hay (even take a little mini bale home), make some butter, maybe even a little cheese.  Of course we'll spend time with the animals - learning a little about beef cattle and animal husbandry along the way.  How the farmers protect the bay and are involved in various conservation topics will also be covered.  We might even make some sausage links the old fashioned way!  Lots of hands on - and the opportunity to see firsthand how we  grow pumpkins, corn, make a corn maze,  and take care of our animals.
Butterflies and BUGS!
We'll study the good, the bad, and the ugly!  What an interesting world of insects exists all around us!  We'll learn how dependent we are upon these creatures and how they impact the web of life.  Focus will be on ecology and conservation.  We'll take time to talk about flowers butterflies are attracted to as well as how to develop a butterfly garden.  Students will take home supplies to begin their own insect/butterfly collection and during the camp, we'll do lots of identification and life cycles of these amazing insects.
Herb Camp
So many things to do with herbs!  we'll dye stuff, make sachets, cook with herbs and much more.  Studens will make herb jelly, learn how to dry them and the best ways to preserve them, make some sun tea with stevia, even a tea party with herbal teas and cookies they've made themselves!  A busy week to be sure with plants and more to take home - Students will make their own container herb garden with plants of their choice and learn how to take care of it as well.
Art Camp
Another jam packed camp with lots of arts to explore, create, and take home.  Concentration will be on Native American Art with a little bit of history thrown in.  Basics of color wheel will be covered.  Students will be involved with weaving making jewelry, mosaics, dreamcatchers, mocassins, even objects out of gourds!  Fun fill, and fast moving, this workshop will be taught by Britney Mongold, our resident artist responsible for the artwork on the Virginia carousel and all the research that went into the design for the 30 horses.
Drama Camp
What a great way for children to explore the wonderful world of performing arts.  In the course of a very short week, students will create, direct, and perform their very own musical for friends and family.  Along the way, they'll learn about improvisation, improve their diction, learn about blocking, casting, costuming, directing and makeup.  Limited to 12 students.  This is a weeklong camp, no single day camp days offered for this week.
Adult education Series coming shortly.
